How Lasers Are Used For Treating Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged and swollen veins that are visible underneath the skin’s surface. Laser treatment is usually used to treat varicose veins and works by using a highly focused beam of light to heat the varicose veins to the point of scarring. This scarring damages the veins, causing them to wither and close, eventually dying and becoming no longer visible.

There are two major types of laser treatments for varicose veins, these are: Simple Laser Treatment – this treatment is used for treating veins close to the surface of the skin, such as tiny varicose veins and spider veins. It works by applying a laser charge on the skin over which the varicose veins are visible. The objective is to scar the vein without affecting the skin.

This treatment is usually safe, painless and highly effective, and is carried out over a number of sessions – usually every 6 to 12 weeks. The spacing is to minimise the effects of the lasers on the skin by giving it enough time to heal. For more details, see this article from lasrer veins brisbane.

Endovenous Laser Treatment – this treatment is used for treating larger varicose veins, especially those buried deep beneath the skin surface. It works by making an incision on the skin through which a thin tube (catheter) is inserted.

This catheter is then guided by an ultrasound so that it enters the varicose vein and is positioned correctly. Once in position, a laser is passed through the catheter and into the varicose vein and begins delivering short bursts of heat energy that burns up the vein, causing it to shrivel and close. Once closed, the catheter is withdrawn and the incision sewn up.

Endovenous laser treatment is usually carried out using either local anaesthesia or a mild sedative.
